Project Overview
Elder Hall stands as one of the most historically and culturally significant landmarks of the University of Adelaide and the broader North Terrace cultural precinct. DASH Architects is proud to have supported the University through a series of conservation and upgrade projects over recent years — work that culminated in receiving the 2019 David Saunders Heritage Award from the Australian Institute of Architects (SA Chapter).
Among the most notable of these initiatives was the removal of the 1961 addition at the rear of the Conservatorium and the meticulous reconstruction of the original northern façade. This work was informed by comprehensive research into the building’s historic form and underpinned by detailed technical knowledge of traditional construction techniques. The project also introduced a new formal rear entrance, meeting the functional requirements of the Conservatorium while celebrating the enduring and evolving legacy of this distinguished facility.
DASH Architects’ involvement extended to the internal refurbishment of the hall, encompassing new seating, recarpeting, and upgrades to building services — all designed to enhance both the performance environment and the visitor experience.
Elder Hall today stands as a testament to DASH Architects’ multi-disciplinary expertise and commitment to excellence in heritage conservation and project delivery. Through our collaborative approach, we continue to assist clients in realising projects that uphold the highest standards while ensuring the ongoing cultural vitality of South Australia’s most treasured heritage places.
