Project Overview

Constructed in 1883, Fort Largs was designed as a defensive military installation—unwelcoming and inaccessible to the public. Following more than 60 years of neglect after its decommissioning, the site was purchased by PEET Limited when released for sale by the State Government.  DASH Architects provided specialist advisory services to navigate the complex heritage requirements of this project, including Heritage Agreements, contractual obligations, and the adaptive reuse of this unique site.

Extensive conservation works were required due to the fort’s deteriorated condition and coastal exposure, drawing on DASH’s decades of specialist heritage experience. A new feature building was designed along the axis of former fort additions, establishing a welcoming gateway. A tunnel beneath the embankments links the old and new, while the design of new elements—through scale, proportion, and materiality—respects and enhances the historic character of the site and setting, ensuring the historic setting of the place is not dominated by the new additions.
